Vietnam adventure - Elephant ride

Elephants and Waterfalls

Route: Buon Ma Thuot - Lak Lake - Nha Trang

Very few travellers ever venture out as far as remote Central Vietnam. Although, if you have a day or two to spare we think you'll enjoy this Vietnam adventure tour from the countryside to the coast. It's the more scenic option compared to a quick flight from Hoi An to Nha Trang. How does a picnic by a waterfall sound, followed by a quick swim in a wading pool or a hike?

We'll also take you on a fun and exciting look around the area during an elephant ride. Climbing a top of one of these gentle giants and swaying along with every step is an enjoyable way to see the sights. You'll pass by villages with small children sneaking a peek and waving to you from a distance. When your gentle grey giant eventually crosses the river you may get more than your feet wet as it makes its way towards the other side. Back on dry land you'll explore a local town on foot before boarding a wooden canoe for another river crossing. Accommodation in this area is basic; however we stumbled upon a local resort with lots of local charm for you to stay at during your adventure.

Day 1: Picnic by the falls

You'll most likely arrive for this module at Buon Ma Thuot after having taken a flight from Danang (near Hoi An). If so, your plane will land shortly before noon. After you collect your luggage, your driver will take you to Vietnam's largest collection of waterfalls. A picnic lunch will be waiting for you upon arrival. Pick a nice spot by the falls and enjoy the view as you sit back and unpack your tasty treats. Depending on water levels in the wading pools, you can go for a refreshing swim whilst you're here.

After lunch you can lace up your hiking boots and explore a hiking trail that will take you across suspension bridges from one waterfall to the next. In the afternoon our driver will collect you for the one hour drive to Lak Lake. Tourism hasn't yet taken off in this area, so there are only a few places to stay at. This evening you'll spend the night at a resort where you'll have your own basic, yet pleasant bungalow cabin to spend the night in.

Day 2: Elephant ride and river crossing

After breakfast, you'll set off on a fun elephant ride. Very few tourists ever visit this region and those who do generally don't arrive until later in the day. So basically you'll have the entire area to yourself during your early morning ride.

Your massive four-legged host will take you on a journey past remote country villages where curious villagers welcome visitors with smiles and waves. You might have to struggle to stay dry when your elephant steps into the river to cross over to the other side, especially if he gets a bit cheeky and decides to give you a shower with his trunk. When you reach the shore you'll go for a walk through a country town before climbing into a hollowed out tree log and sailing back across the river. You'll arrive back at your cabin around lunch time. You can spend the afternoon relaxing, reading and swimming.

Day 3: Off to the coast...

After breakfast our driver will be waiting to take you to the starting point of your next Vietnam adventure; the beach town of Nha Trang. Whether you prefer to stay in Nha Trang or stay on a remote Palm Island Vietnam (Whale Island), its entirely up to you. Your next destination is approximately 4 hours away.
