Mekong Delta trip - Sightseeing by boat

Deeper into the Delta

Route: Ho Chi Minh City - Cai Be - Vinh Long - Can Tho - Ho Chi Minh City

Southern Vietnam is often visited for the Mekong Delta: an intricate network of waterways speckled with small islands and fruit plantations. All along the Mekong you'll see the Vietnamese working in, on or next to the murky waters. This Mekong Delta trip starts out with a Mekong motor boat ride, but before long you'll glide through the delta's narrow channels in a hollowed out tree log instead. We'll arrange for you to stay at a cosy bungalow that can only be accessed by boat so that you can experience all the Mekong has to offer. In the evening you may see a few merchants floating by with boats laden with fruits and vegetables for resort restaurants. Before the trip ends you'll also go on a bike ride along the Mekong's tropical shores and also visit the Mekong's largest floating markets.

At the end of this trip you can either continue on to Cambodia, the tropical island of Phu Quoc, or simply return to Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 1: Sailing through the Mekong

Getting your Mekong Delta trip underway our driver will come to collect you right after breakfast. He'll take you on a two and a half hour drive deep into the delta. Once you reach the Mekong you'll sail through several channels and past various islands in a small motor boat. Some waterways are smaller than others, so before long you'll trade in the larger motor boat for a traditional rowing boat.

You'll stop for lunch then continue your travels visiting a fruit plantation and a small candy factory. Your accommodation for the night is a comfortable, warm and inviting resort that can only be reached by boat. The resort's garden is filled with the same herbs and spices the restaurant will use when preparing your meal in the evening.

Day 2: On the road to Can Tho

After a refreshing morning shower in your open air bathroom, you'll sail off to your next destination, Vinh Long. Upon arrival you'll get to see more of the Mekong; this time by bike instead of by boat. Enjoy navigating the narrow paths, receiving friendly greetings from local people working the fields and hearing small children bashfully calling out, 'Hello'.

You'll spend about an hour and a half biking. You'll stop off for a cold drink at a local restaurant filled with the heady scent of incense and offers for the gods. After you return to where you started your riding adventure you'll have plenty of time for a long, lazy lunch. After lunch your driver will take you to Can Tho where you'll spend the second night of this Mekong Delta trip.

Day 3: Floating market

You'll wake up early on Day 3 of your Mekong Delta trip to visit the local floating market, quite a colourful happening. Boats carrying all sorts of vegetables and fruit, clothing, hats, umbrellas and bottles of rice wine sail right past each other, trying to sell their goods. There's quite a bit of haggling going on. Have a go at it and try to get the best price you can for a coconut or simply enjoy the sights and sounds surrounding you.

Afterwards it's time to continue on to your next destination. You can either return to Ho Chi Minh City, you can travel from Vietnam to Cambodia or you can visit tropical Phu Quoc Island. Check out our summary of Vietnam trips or ask one of our Vietnam travel specialists for tips.

If there are other Vietnam Travel Plan travellers leaving on the same day as you, you may share a transfer and sail in a small group of up to 9 people.
